《《蘋果》》劇情簡介:Salomé (1923), a silent fi lm direct ed by Charles Bryant and starring Al la Nazimova , is a film adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play of the sa me name. The play its elf is a l oose rete lling of the bi blical story o f King Herod a nd his executio n of John the Baptis t (here, as in Wilde& ;#39;s play, called Jokaan an) at t he requ est of his ste pdaughter , Salomé, w hom he lusts after. Sa lomé is often called one of the first art film s to be mad e in the U.S. [citation ne eded] The hig hly stylized co stumes, exagge rated ac ting (e ven for the p eriod), minimal sets, and abs ence of all but the mo st necessary pr ops make for a sc reen image much more focused on atmosphere a nd on convey ing a sense of the chara cters&# 39; ind ividual height ened des ires than on conventional plot dev elopment. Despite t he film being o nly a litt le over an hour in length and having no r eal acti on to sp eak of, it co st over $3 50, 000 to ma ke. All the sets were c onstruc ted indoors t o be able to have comple te control over the l ighting. The film was shot c ompletely in b lack and white, matching the illustrations done by Aubrey B eardsley i n the printed e dition of W ilde&#39 ;s play. Th e costumes, de signed by Natacha Rambo va, used mat erial only from Maison L ewis of Pari s, such as the rea l silver lam é loincloths w orn by th e guards. N o major studio would be associated w ith the f ilm, and i t was years aft er its co mpletion befo re it wa s released, by a min or inde pendent distributor. It was a comple te failu re at the ti me and m arked t he end of Nazimova&a mp;#39;s p roducing career. A l ongstanding r umor, which seems t o have started wh ile the film w as still in production , suggests th at its c ast is compris ed entirel y of gay and bise xual ac tors in an homa ge to Oscar Wilde, as per st ar and produ cer Nazimo va's demand. It is, of cour se, imp ossible to sa y, but o ne of the ex tras in Salom é reported th at a numb er of the c ast members —both f eatured an d extras —were inde ed gay, but not an unusual perce ntage of them, and certainly not all of them. What can be said is that Nazimova herse lf was a l esbian, the tw o guard cha racters (who, next to Salo mé, ha ve the most screen time ) are at lea st played very stereotypi cally g ay, and seve ral of the fe male courti ers are me n in drag. Salomé was screene d in 1989 at t he New York I nternat ional Festi val of Lesbian and Gay film s and in 1990 at the New York Gay Experiment al Film Fe stival. In 2 000, the U nited S tates L ibrary of Co ngress deemed th e film &quo t;cultur ally si gnificant&am p;quot; and sele cted it for pre servati on in t he Natio nal Film Regis try.
