He and the com mand staf f learn that th e death of P resident Santia go was act ually an ass assinatio n masterminded by Vice Presiden t Clark (who as sumed the Presi dency upon Santiago&a mp;#39;s deat h). A co nflict develops between th e Babylon 5 command sta ff and the Psi Corps, an increa singly autocra tic org anization whi ch oversees and control s the lives of human tel epaths. Command er Ivanova , the secon d-in-comm and of t he station, i s secretly a la tent te lepath w ho has illicitl y avoided registe ring with th e Psi Corps. The Sha dows, an ancie nt and extremel y powerful rac e who hav e recently emerged fro m hibernatio n, are revealed to be the cause o f a varie ty of m ysterio us and distu rbing events, including the attack on the Narn outpost at the end of 2258. Centauri Ambassador Londo Moll ari unknowing ly enlis ts their aid t hrough his ass ociation with t he mysterio us Mr. Mord en in the ongoing conflict with the Narn. T he elderly and ailing Centau ri emperor, long an advo cate of re conciliat ion with the Narn , dies suddenly whil e visiting B abylon 5. A number of cons pirators, in cluding Londo Molla ri and Refa, take co ntrol of the Centauri government by assassin ating thei r opponents an d placi ng the late emperor&#3 9;s unstabl e nephew on the throne. Their first act is to start open aggress ion agai nst the N arn. Aft er a full-scal e war breaks out, th e Centauri eve ntually co nquer Narn in a bruta l attack involvi ng mass dri vers, out lawed weapons of mass destruct ion. Towards the end of th e year, the C lark admi nistrati on begins to sh ow increa singly totalitarian ch aracteristics, clamping down on dissent an d restr icting fre edom of sp eech. The V orlons are rev ealed to be the basis of l egends about angels on various worlds, i ncluding Earth, and are t he ancient en emies of the S hadows. The y enlis t the aid o f Sheridan and the Babylon 5 command st aff in t he struggle aga inst the S hadows.
