He and the command staf f learn that the death of President Santiago w as actually an assassi nation ma sterminded by Vice President Clark (who a ssumed t he Presid ency upo n Santia go' s death). A conflict d evelops bet ween th e Babylon 5 command staff and the Psi Co rps, an inc reasingly au tocratic organizati on which o versees and co ntrols the lives of human telepaths. C ommander Ivanov a, the sec ond-in-co mmand of th e stati on, is secret ly a laten t telep ath who has illicitly av oided r egistering with t he Psi Corps. T he Shadows, an ancient an d extremely pow erful race w ho have recentl y emerged from hibernati on, are revealed to be the cause of a variety of myst erious and dis turbing events , including th e attack on th e Narn outpos t at the end of 2258. Cent auri Ambassador Londo Mollari unknowingl y enlists their aid through h is associa tion with t he mysteriou s Mr. Mo rden in the ongoing c onflict with th e Narn. The elderl y and ail ing Centauri emperor, long an adv ocate of reconcili ation w ith the Narn, dies s uddenly wh ile vis iting Baby lon 5. A number of cons pirators, including L ondo Mollar i and Refa, ta ke control of the Ce ntauri g overnmen t by assassina ting their o pponents an d placing the late emperor&a mp;#39;s unstable n ephew on the th rone. Their first act is t o start open aggression against the Narn. Af ter a ful l-scale war br eaks out, the Centauri event ually c onquer Na rn in a br utal att ack involving mass drivers, outlawed we apons of mass de struction. Tow ards the end o f the year, the Clark administratio n begins to show increas ingly tota litarian chara cteristics, clamping down on dissent and restrict ing freedom of speech. Th e Vorlons are revealed to be the basis of legends ab out angels on vario us world s, inc luding Ea rth, and are t he ancient enemies of the Shadows. They enlist th e aid of She ridan and the Babylo n 5 command s taff in the s truggle against the Sh adows.
